Wellington Summer
Swimming Championships
Friday 20th - 23rd Janurary 2012
Champs started well with a gold medal to Courtney
Carson on the opening night in the 800Fr and more were to come... 27 Gold,
29 Silver and 35 Bronze.
A Wellington record was achieved by Alex in
the 50 back for 14 year old girls, great work Alex who also went on to
winher age group points
However our top medal
taker for the weekend was our own wee dynamo Richard
Sasse with 11 medals in all he also took out his age group points.
A snippet of the weekend was Max and Brooke
achieveing their NAGS times, Kellys Juniors all having some amazing swims
and on last count from Kelly this morning prior to racing we had 24 Junior
National Qualifiers a great credit to Kelly and her swimmers fantastic
work. Liam Carson kept getting PB after PB and not little ones either
and to top it off he gained a medal in the 200 back way to go Liam. Kallum
swimming times that had some coaches shaking their heads think how? New
young swimmers like Alexander Unstead-Joss making finals in his first
"real" meet. And it was especially nice to see new faces on
the podium, especially that lovely smile of Tsai.
The senior boys were also making appearances
in the medals with Lochie, Jared, Nicholas, Tom E and Seth all taking
the podium with some gutsy swims especially when taking some of the best
swimmers in their field in the country.
Disappointments were had by some as comes with
the territory in competition, but all our swimmers held themselves in
good steed and even when the going got tough they still kept smiles on
their faces, and when the bodies and minds started to give up our swimmers
kept taking the blocks and giving there best and thats all as parents
we can ask.
We finished second to Capital in the points
table and took out two individual age group awards with Alex and Richie
so all in all a good weekend swimming.
A HUGE thanks to
everyone who lent a hand and especially
to Faye for co-ordinating the whole weekend, a MAMMOTH task and
done with such calm and grace. With such long sessions and not much time
in between it was nice to see those who didn't have the time or energy
to head home in between picnicing in the park.

SZR Queensland Trip 2011
Monday 19 December 2011
Swimzone racing swimmers return from Queensland Swimming Championships
buzzing!, Tom, Alex, Sean and Bryony returned from Australia early on
Sunday morning after competing for 6 days at the Chandler Aquatic Centre
in Brisbane. All four swimmers had some massive pbs during the week.
Tom had a top 10 finish in the 200 fly finishing the heats
9th (3rd visitor). Alex swam in the 200 IM, 800 Free and 100 Back finals,
breaking a Wellington record in the 100 back to finish 6th. Sean swam
a NAGs qualifying time in his 200 back. Bryony had a top 10 finish in
the 200 Breast finishing the heats in 9th (3rd visitor).
These young swimmers represented our club in an outstanding
fashion. They had an amazing time, at times sharing their warm up lanes
with world record holders, Olympic and world champions. They got to meet
and watch some of the worlds best swimmers including; Brenton Rickard,
Jessicah Schipper, Emily Seebohm, Taewhan Park, James Magnussen, Ellen
Gandy, Leisel Jones, Yolane Kukla and Libby Trickett.
The SZR team stayed at the Sleeman Sports Centre just a
2 minute walk from the Chandler Pool, they shared the facilities with
a Japanese team. They got to see the work being done to upgrade the facilities
for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The meet was attended by swimmers from
many countries including; Japan, Korea, Great Britian, Norway, Singapore,
China and Hong Kong. Many of New Zealands top swimmers were in attendance;
Sophia Batchelor, Natalie Weigersma, Corey Main, Matt Stanley and Dylan
Dunlop-Barrett. This meet was a wonderful opportunity for our swimmers
who not only gained experience racing in a world class meet but they got
to experience first hand the pressure and excitement of such a meet.

Dear Mako, Hammerhead, Orca and Marlin swimmers and families,
Re: QUEENSLAND STATE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Friday June 10th at 6:30 PM at Pelorous Trust House Seaview
(right before SZR Prize Giving) we will be holding an important information
meeting about the SZR Queensland State Championships Trip.
We would encourage all of you to come and hear about this
exciting event the club is planning.
We are hoping to send a large team of our swimmers to the
Queensland State Championships in Brisbane Australia in early December
2011. The meet is from Sat Dec 10th to Friday Dec 16th. To be eligible
for the Swimzone team, swimmers need to be aged 13 years or over as of
March 1 2012 (ie the cub will only be sending swimmers from the Mako,
hammerhead, Orca and Marlin teams) and reach a qualifying time set by
Queensland Swimming for the event.
This meet is a fantastic swim meet with some of the fastest
age group swimmers in the world attending. Last year 1569 swimmers attended
and they were from all the australian states, as well as France, Great
Britain, Hong Kong, Japan, New Caledonia and 61 swimmers from New Zealand.
The finals are fast but the qualifying times are roughly somewhere between
NZ div 2 and div 1 times depending on the event and age group - so some
of you will have already qualified and it is well within reach of many
of you with a bit of hard work and determination!
At the meeting we will be giving introductory information
on the goals of the trip, the cost of the trip, accommodation, travel
etc.
This meet will be an amazing opportunity for swimmers to
experience a world class age group swim meet. We see this as a development
opportunity for our swimmers. It is on the Swim New Zealand age group
and youth calendar as it is seen as a worthwhile meet to attend for swimmers
aiming to make New Zealand teams and attend future international competitions.
Our Orca and Marlin swimmers will benefit from the experience to swim
with, race against and be inspired by very fast swimmers. They will also
gain valuable experience of international competition. As the qualifying
times are achievable it also provides a great motivation and a nice stepping
stone for our Mako and Hammerhead swimmers who have (or are near to) Div
2 times and are trying to make the jump to Div 1 and qualify for NAGS
in 2012. Qualifying for this meet will mean they are closer to those Div
1 times and being at the meet will give them more really competitive opportunities
to get those NAGS times earlier in the year than they might otherwise
achieve them. It will also be a fantastic team building event which all
of these swimmers will remember for the rest of their lives.
So come along before the prize giving and find out more
about it! Even if you think this might be beyond your reach this year
please come and hear about what is planned. We want as many of you to
qualify and attend the swim meet as possible so that this is a really
significant club event that motivates you all to swim faster and get us
closer to the clubs goal of being the top club in Wellington and one of
the top 5 clubs in the country!
See you there!

Swimzone Racing Member Survey
Sunday 27th March 2011
Dear Swimzone Racing families,
Last year multiple meetings were held with parents to explain
the new team management structure. At each meeting it was promised that
the club would be seeking your opinion as to how you feel the changes
we have implemented have impacted the club.
To this end, your Swimzone Racing (SZR) board are conducting
an online survey of all SZR families to get feedback on various aspects
of the club. We strongly encourage you to take the time to fill in the
survey as we really want your opinion on how the club is going and how
we could be better. The survey should take about 15 min if you just opt
for ticking the boxes. It will take longer if you write comments (which
we would love!) but we understand your time is precious and we will be
very happy if you only have time to tick boxes!
Each family has been sent an email with a unique link to the survey for
the family. Each family will be able to fill in the online survey once.
The email will come from lsadleir@xtra.co.nz
and the subject heading is Swimzone Racing Family Survey.
We are hoping for responses from every family in the club
so please don't let us down!
The survey is for parents of swimmers. If you are a swimmer
and you received an email that means your email is the email the club
has for your family. Could you please get your parents to follow the link
on the email so they can answer the survey for your family. We are looking
at the possibility of putting a survey together for swimmers in the near
future to get swimmers feedback.
If you are not able to do the survey electronically and
wish to respond via a hard copy please email Lynette Sadleir at lsadleir@xtra.co.nz.
If your family does not get an email could you please let Lynette know
and she will endeavor to figure out what went wrong!

Our elite swimmers hit the pool today rearing to
go and ready to push themselves to the limits, all the training has been
done, no more preparation time left, it is now up to the swimmers, their
focus and drive will be all they need to reach their goals. We couldn't
have hoped for a better start, 3 medals in day one (2 gold and 1 silver)
plus a handful of top ten finishes. Hopefully a sign of more success to
come.
Well
success did come and what a fantastic meet for Swimzone 18 medals plus
17 other top ten finishes. Well done team and to top it all off we finished
in the Top 10 clubs in New Zealand just awesome.
Well done John on the success of your young team big things are out there

Some great swims from our team:- Some of the highlights
mentioned were:
Lochie's 200 breast finish -out touching the others to claim the gold
Alex's 800 free - she was the only 13 year old in her heat because of
the seeding and she was determined to get the gold. Second place was 14
seconds behind her.

Callum making the final of the 200 free after being dqed in the 400
Tom England going under the minute in the 100 free

the green looked amazing poolside and we stood out. Ministry of Swimming
also outfitted the kids in great t-shirts and warm up caps, thanks for
the great sponosrship and support, also thanks to our anonomus supplier
of individually named swim bags. The swimmers loved them and were all
very excited and appreciative so big thanks to who ever you are they were
really appreciated!
Thanks to all parents who helped out being officials, or
in any other capacity throughout the weekend. Thanks also to our fantastic
team managers who did an outstanding job all weekend you had kids inspired
and eager, they really looked like a team and watching the support they
gave each other from the pool deck was fantastic.
Well done Kelly on coaching the squad to such success not
only nationally but also at a personal level for the swimmers. Swimzone
ended up the 6th best performing team nationally. Medals and top ten finishes
were shared amoungst 10 different swimmers so that is a credit to the

Monday 7 February 2011*
Oh my hot does not describe
it, 35 degrees in the heat of the day and still 33 at 6pm at night. The
pool complex would have been close to 40 degrees. Numerous gallons of
water consumed, and thank goddness for the outdoor pools being open so
the kids could cool off a bit and have a bit of fun on dive boards and
slides at the end of their swimming. Many a parent dabbled their feet
in the toddler pool.
The swimming
was up and down but some fabulous times were acheived, Jaymee Lee's 400IM
coming to mind and medals being shared around between the boys and the
girls (Kahu got her first swimming medal with a fab swim) with young and
older team members all getting a turn on the dias. Ben de Vries was having
a right royal battle taking on Issac Foote of Masterton and playing ping
pong with the gold and silver medals.
Our late entry
relay teams both boys and girls did fantastically, Trent Hunter, Nick
Berry, Ben de Vries and Todd Hurley in the 200 free, Stacey Sturm, Bryony
Thorne, Ashliegh Rankin and Megan Lensink in the 200 free, and Jamie Sullivan,
Kahu Salzmann, Jayme Lee Hunter and Kaitlyn Ingram in the 200 IM all taking
3rd place, thanks to all who took part in a relay it was great to see
such team spirit.
Another highlight
was the time trial between Jayme Lee and Bryony in the 100 breast who
both managed to achieve the times they were chasing for national events.
The last event of the weekend saw Jamie S line up in the champion of champions
50 free race after completing a spectaular swim in her 50 free race to
gain her Junior time. She was a tiny flash in pink with the the other
swimmers all older and rather a lot taller than her, but she represented
the club fantastically and put it all in the pool with all parents and
kids screaming for her on her sideline.
A fun weekend, lots of
Junior and Div II times achieved, some great battles in the pool ending
with very tired kids and parents but thats whats its all about!
Officals Co-Ordinator Wrap Up
Wednesday 30 January 2011*
Hi everyone
Thank to all parents who volunteered for Wellington Champs.
We not only had swimmers qualifying in the pool but also had 3 parents
qualifying for pool deck duties:
Robina Scahill – as Regional Referee
Trish Keenan – as IOT
Lynley Ball – as IOT
Congratulations to these parents. Now these 3 parents have
qualified it leaves gaps for other parents to help out at these meets.
At these champs around 50% of swim families volunteered
for duties. The club would like to see a higher percentage of parents
helping out at these meets. We don’t want to get like other clubs do and
tell parents what session they’ll be helping out and then they it’s up
to them to organise a replacement if unable to help. Our current system
is preferred but we need more parents volunteering. We look at a ratio
of 2 sessions per swimmer (ie parents helping out) at Wellington Champs.
A few highlights from my perspective
- Bayley Rose’s 100m free and yelling to the time keepers
– I got second
- Trish Keenan running down pool side with a smile “a mile
wide” – “I’ve qualified”
- Tom lending Michael his cap and goggles to race as had
misplaced his
- Terrelle really disappointed with her 200m back and racing
one hour later and taking the gold in the 50m breast
One question I do have – what does Lochie Berg eat for breakfast?
The guy is a “fish”.
One statistic that hasn’t been advertised – is that 12 and
unders – Swimzone Racing – easily won on points at the meet.

Session One
- Courtney Carson wins the 13yrs and under girls 800fr the first event
of the Wellington Summer Champs. She recorded a fantastic PB. Her seed

Well done guys amazing start to the weekend for Swimzone we are all looking
forward to getting there and in the pool tomorrow and recording more,
medals, top ten finishes and pb's for the whole of the Swimzone Racing
Team!
Session
Two and Three -A great day for Swimzone with Medals, top
ten placings and some amazing PBs - Nicholas Berry WOW!. But Nic wasn't
the only one to pull an amazing swim out of the bag many PB's were acheived,
more qualifiers for NAGS, Div II and Juniors appeared but far two many
to lis,t but here are the medal winners to date below.
Session
Four and Five - More fabulous swimming by our Swimzone
Racing team, more NAGS, Div II and Juniors Times achieved with new team
members for our National Meet Teams. Its lovely to see all the hard work
paying off. Some swimmers have impressed with Callum Brigden and Lochie
Berg both coming to mind smashing PB's left right and centre well done
boys the hard work and braving the sun, rain and wind at Wainui is paying
off! Everyone should be proud of themselves putting all the effort into
the pool truely is awe inspiring. Also big thanks to all those parents
who have put their hands up to help in one or more of all 7 sessions is
like seven meets so thanks from the board for giving the kids your time;
they couldn't do it with out you. One more day to go!
Session
Six and Seven - Well its all over. Lots of tired swimmers
today, but they still managed to do some amazing swims, It was nice to
see some internal competition between the sexes with twelve year old girls
and boys tussling it out event after event. Medals again were coming thick
and fast and it was great to see so many top ten places today even with
tired bodies and minds. I am sure not only swimmers but Mums, Dads, Caregivers
and support crews will SLEEP WELL TONIGHT - Next step National Events!!
